Import duties, tariffs, and fees explained

How duty is calculated on goods from China, which tariffs and fees apply, and how to know your cost before the goods ship.

How duty is calculated

Most duty is a percentage of the customs value, which is generally the price paid for the goods. The rate depends on the product’s HTS code and its country of origin.

Tariffs on goods from China

Many Chinese products carry Section 301 duties on top of the regular rate, and other tariff actions have been added and changed over time. The rules move often, so check the current rate before each order.

Fees on every entry

The merchandise processing fee is a percentage of value with a minimum and a cap that adjust each fiscal year. Ocean shipments also pay the harbor maintenance fee of 0.125 percent of cargo value.

How to keep cost predictable

Classify before you order, model the full landed cost, and consider DDP pricing if you want one delivered number per shipment.

Built for businesses that import on a schedule

We work with businesses that move physical goods: importers and distributors, wholesalers and retailers, Amazon and FBA sellers, e-commerce and private-label brands, furniture and home decor companies, apparel and fashion labels, construction-material suppliers, manufacturers bringing in components or raw materials, and industrial and automotive-parts companies. Any product category works, as long as it is physical commercial goods. That is where our door-to-door service pays off: we plan the freight, clear customs, and deliver, shipment after shipment.
